Project Structure

Project structure encompasses the systematic arrangement and organization of research components, enabling a clear and logical framework for conducting and presenting a study

01.

A retrofit study for end-of-life lignite power plants

New fuel mix and transforming existing infrastructure

leaving the country with extensive abandoned infrastructure, the need for production of clean energy and readjusting the social-economic status of the neighbouring communities.

MetaLignite project aims to study methods for the transition to this post-lignite era.

These methods entail a dual scope.

A roadmap of repurposing these lignite power plants as power plants based on combustion or co-combustion of local biomass and/or wood pellets and/or Synthetic Natural Gas.

These studies aim to investigate the best fuel combination dictated by local conditions regarding raw materials, transportation and distribution, using multiple scenarios and conducting SWOT analyses.

Meticulous planning of modification of existing infrastructure switching from lignite combustion based power plants to alternative fuels ones using wood pellets, biomass or/and synthetic natural gas and their potential co-combustion combinations.

02.

Assessment of Εconomic Environmental and Social Impact

Gaining a Holistic Perspective

following the lignite phase-out mandane in three distinct domains, which will be thoroughly researched.

Economic impact which dictates extensive techno-economic studies evaluating their technological and economic feasibility.

Environmental impact which involves Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) evaluation and the ecological implications of diverse processes and products.

Social impact through thorough examination of the employment impacts and a social analysis of the transition to the post-lignite era for a comprehensive understanding of the societal consequences of this shift.

03.

Acquiring a toolkit for future reference

Solid foundations for optimal decisions

for informed decision making to all affected domains and interested parties.

Investors, local communities and government departments will be able to take advantage of the best scenario, knowing in advance the benefits, risks and obstacles and taking appropriate measures to enhance or minimize them.

HECC can be a valuable partner to offer solutions for specific needs and plans to concerned bodies, by evaluating and considering all relative research on economic, environmental and social impact acquired through MetaLignite project.
