HECC’s role in post-lignite era: Guidelines for future use of existing infrastructure

With the completion of the first phase of the project, HECC will be able to present comprehensive proposals to any interested party for the more effective and efficient management of existing lignite power plants.

HECC will be able to suggest immediate and feasible solutions to any investor who wishes to transform these plants, in line with the environmental policies that dictate the achievement of an energy transition towards cleaner forms of energy, as well as the zero-carbon footprint policy by 2050.

The combination of research and industrial work related to lignite power plants, which NTUA and the University of Western Macedonia have already undertaken, along with the detailed material that will result from the MetaLignite project, will serve as a significant toolkit for the desired lignite phase-out project of the country.

Moreover, it will play a crucial role in achieving the sought-after energy transition by substituting fuels and furthering the production of alternatives.

HECC’s role in post-lignite era: Analysis of post-lignite social aspect

Lignite power plants have played a prominent role in the country’s energy landscape for many decades.

They supplied energy to both Greece’s industrial production and households.

Their presence transformed the regions in which they were established and shaped the future of their residents.

In many ways, their existence influenced the professional as well as personal lives of the locals, significantly impacting their natural environment.

In this emerging new era, marked by the revival of lignite power plants through their conversion into facilities for producing new alternative fuels, it’s imperative to support the local communities.

HECC can contribute by studying the social impacts on these communities.

Lignite phase-out requires a workforce with different professional backgrounds than the lignite power plants required, which has profound implications for areas neighboring these former lignite power plants.

The professional future of this population can and must be redefined in light of new circumstances.

The societal implications can be meticulously defined, highlighting ways in which the new reality can be transformed into a substantial opportunity for local communities, minimizing or even eliminating all the disadvantages of the past.
